Chunky Knit Sweaters, 1.5–7 Gauge, from USD 5 FOB

Polyester, acrylic and wool blends, with the fibre content of every style printed in the table below.

Twelve styles in heavy gauge, 175 g to 870 g. Nine of them are polyester-led. Two carry 5% alpaca and 12% wool. The page states which is which, because a chunky sweater is not automatically a wool sweater.

Read the fibre content before the price

A search for chunky knit sweaters lands on a lot of pages that imply wool and ship polyester. This section exists so you can tell which one you are looking at.

9

polyester-led

Polyester is the first fibre by weight in nine of the twelve styles. Wool content runs from 2% to 9% as a hand-feel addition.

2

with alpaca and wool

Styles 69034ZR and 6E034ZR carry 5% alpaca and 12% wool, the highest wool content here. These two have the fullest hand.

1

no wool at all

Style ZC004 is polyester and nylon with elastane. It is listed so the range is complete, not hidden at the bottom.

If you are looking for a wool sweater, this is the wrong page. The merino wool sweaters page lists eleven styles in 100% merino and merino–cashmere blends, from USD 10 to USD 25. What this page offers instead is volume at a low FOB: chunky silhouettes, heavy pieces, quick turnaround, at USD 5 to USD 10.

Prices are indicative FOB per piece, before negotiation, and assume 200 pieces per colour. FOB Shanghai or Qingdao; CIF on request. Composition is given exactly as it is knitted — we do not round 2% wool up to "wool blend" in the copy.

Why 2% wool is in a polyester sweater

It is a real decision with a real effect, and it is not the same as making a wool sweater.

What it changes

  • Hand. Wool softens the touch of a synthetic yarn, which otherwise reads dry or slick.
  • Surface. A small wool content takes the sheen off polyester and gives the stitch a matte finish.
  • Loft. Wool fibre bulks slightly, so the piece feels fuller at the same gauge.
  • Brushing. Wool content makes a brushed surface possible. All-polyester brushes but the pile is flatter.

What it does not change

  • Warmth. 2% wool does not make a polyester sweater warm like a wool sweater. Nine of these twelve are cool-weather pieces by weight, not by fibre.
  • Pilling behaviour. It follows the synthetic base, not the wool fraction.
  • Care. Treat the garment as a synthetic blend, not as wool.

If your tech pack calls for a genuine wool chunky, we knit that too — the gauge is the same, the yarn and the price are not. Tell us the composition you need and we will quote both.

Gauge here means weight, not fineness

In the chunky band a lower number means a heavier piece. That is the opposite of how fine-gauge ranges are sold.

Gauge What it looks like Styles in this band
1.5GGHand-knit look; the stitch is enormous, the piece is a statement2 styles, 380–415 g
3GG – 3.5GGVery heavy; the 870 g piece lives here2 styles, 435–870 g
5GGChunky sweater; visible stitches, cable and textured work6 styles, 205–490 g
7GGMid-chunky; the lightest pieces in this range2 styles, 175–246 g

A 1.5GG machine is a different machine from a 7GG machine, and few factories run both. We place the work at the factory set up for the band your style needs, which is why one order can cover the full range.

Who this range is for

A good fit

  • High-street and online-only labels building a chunky winter drop at a retail price under USD 60.
  • Buyers who need 300–3,000 pieces per style and cannot wait three months.
  • Ranges where the chunky piece is a volume driver and the wool piece sits above it.

A poor fit

  • Anyone whose label promise is natural fibre. These are synthetic-led, and the certificate file will not change that.
  • Premium wool programmes. Use the merino page instead.
  • Orders where the buyer needs 2% wool to count as a wool sweater. We would rather turn that down than word it that way.

Chunky knit questions

Are these wool sweaters?

No, and the table above says so per style. Nine of the twelve are polyester-led, one is acrylic-led, and two carry 5% alpaca and 12% wool. Wool content across the range runs from 0% to 12%. If you need a wool sweater, the merino page lists eleven styles from USD 10.

Why put 2% wool in a polyester sweater?

A small wool content changes the hand and the surface. It softens the touch, adds a little loft, and takes the synthetic sheen off the yarn. At 2% it is a finishing effect rather than a performance claim, and we state the figure rather than describing the sweater as wool.

What does a chunky knit sweater cost?

USD 5 to USD 10 FOB per piece across the twelve styles, assuming 200 pieces per colour. The heaviest piece, 870 g at 3.5GG, is USD 9. The spread follows weight and fibre, not brand.

How heavy can you knit?

Up to 870 g at size S in the current range, in 3.5GG. The gauge range here is 1.5GG to 7GG, which covers hand-knit-look statement pieces down to a mid-chunky winter sweater. A 1.5GG piece needs a machine set up for that band, and we place the work at the factory that runs it.

What is the minimum order?

200 pieces per colour on stock shades. A colour dyed to your Pantone reference runs at 1,000 pieces per colour, because the yarn carries its own dyeing minimum. Lower trial quantities are possible at a higher per-piece price.

How long does a chunky order take?

Sample development 7–14 days. Bulk production 45–60 days from order confirmation and sample approval, up to 75 days in peak season (August–October). Heavy gauges do not add a separate stage, but the yarn has to be booked earlier in the season.

Send the composition you actually need

If the answer is polyester at USD 5, we quote that. If it is wool at USD 15, we quote that instead. What we will not do is quote one and ship the other.
